'Soap' & Your Skin

'Soap' & Your Skin

Soap (or body wash - we will use these terms interchangeably) has been a part of our cleansing routine since we were too little to remember. The ‘sudsy’ factor of soap makes us feel clean, and removes dirt and bacteria from our skin. What if we told you that those suds are also stripping your skin of its essential fatty acids and most importantly, all of its moisture? We feel like a broken record at this point, but this is one of the most important things we reiterate time and time again; the tight, itchy, dry feeling you get after your shower… the feeling that immediately makes you grab a bottle of lotion out of the shower… that is not normal. That means your skin has been stripped of its essential nutrients.

This lesson applies to all humans, not just anyone interested in ‘spray tanning’, so this is a lesson that can be taught to anyone who has ‘dry skin’ - ahem your boyfriend/husband/mom/dad/sister/brother/uncle/roommate.

Restoring, repairing and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture and lipid balance is crucial for happy and healthy skin.

What are lipids?

In a nutshell, lipids are skin’s natural fats. They are essential components of skin and play a crucial role in maintaining the strength of the skin’s protective barrier, which holds moisture, protects the skin from damage and keeps dirt and impurities out. They also aid the skin’s natural repair process. While there are many types of lipids, these three are the most prevalent—and important—for the skin.

Cholesterol: This lipid helps accelerate the skin barrier’s recovery and improve the appearance of skin elasticity. Visible skin aging is often caused by cholesterol deficiency on the skin. It’s important to note that cholesterol on your skin is different from the cholesterol found in the blood, and having more of it on your skin won’t cause your blood pressure to spike.

Ceramides: This type of lipid is proven to increase the skin’s hydration and barrier function. Ceramide deficiency is the main cause of dry skin.

Fatty acids: Abundant in young, healthy skin, fatty acids help maintain the skin’s lipid balance.

If your skin is deficient in any of these, simply put, your goGLOW will not look very nice and no matter how beautiful of a glow we provide you with, it will fade poorly.

What is the fix?

To maintain your skin’s natural lipid balance and pH balance, you first should throw away any body wash or cleanser that contains ‘sulfates’. Sulfates cause the lathering effect in products, the ‘suds’.

What are sulfates?

Sulfate is a salt that forms when sulfuric acid reacts with another chemical. It’s a broader term for other synthetic sulfate-based chemicals you may be concerned about, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These compounds are produced from petroleum and plant sources such as coconut and palm oil. You’ll mostly find them in your cleaning and personal care products.

Bottom line;

We strongly suggest replacing all of your body wash with goGLOW CLEANSE. This product is unlike any other 'sulfate free' body wash on the market.

When we say that this will help your skin survive the winter months, we are not joking.

CLEANSE is our pH balancing daily cleanser (soap, body wash, cleanser - same thing). This hydrating cleanser contains hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and create fullness. We have added Organic Gingko Biloba to help with the visible signs of aging. Organic Meadowsweet extract soothes and tones while Organic Calendula extract brightens and reenergizes your skin, making this the perfect soap-free addition to your routine. BONUS; This is a great cleanser to shave with! Also this is safe (and encouraged) to use before your goGLOW service appointments or before applying goGLOW tanning products.

What people are saying about CLEANSE;

“I absolutely love this cleanser. I wash my face with this product every night and follow it up with the Hydrate moisturizer because I have very sensitive skin and have a hard time with standard cleansers. I also use it on my whole body in the winter when my skin is really dry and always with my spray tans. It smells so light and pleasant that even my boyfriend uses it on occasion. This product is by far the best cleanser I have found on the market.”

“I tried this originally only with my spray tans, but now I use it all the time. I noticed after using this a few weeks that I have softer skin and generally do not feel as dry after my showers. One of the goglow girls also suggested I use this to shave with and that helps me prevent any razor bumps or itchy dry skin after shaving!”

“Best body soap EVER. Smells like heaven.”
